Beatrice created a storyline based on Alaire’s animated character, drawing on her own interests to explore the concept of loops. She developed the script based on her research in existentialism, performance theory, phenomenology, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. She centered her research around the relationship between text and movement as different types of languages, finding inspiration from choreographers who have used text, like Hope Boykin, Pina Bausch, Bill T. Jones, William Foresythe, and Judith Jamison.
The script binds together the storytelling forms of animation, choreography, and music. However, the text is not authoritative; it’s not meant to be the primary way to understand the story. Text is typically associated with the mind, intellect, and tangibility, whereas dance, music, and visual art are associated with the body, intuition, and intangibility. In, Out, and Around collapses the mind and body into a single process. Dance, music, animation, and text are all both tangible and intangible.
Beatrice used compositional tools like repetition and self-reference to develop the narrative of the time loop. In her story, which canonically repeats for eternity, she found that no repetition could be exactly the same. The story’s theme of repetition lends itself to dance performance, as dance involves the repetition of training and performing the same movements over and over again. In both cases of dance and In, Out, and Around, the same movement again is never the same.
